home run

/ˌˈhoʊm ˌrʌn/
/həʊm rən/
IPA guide

Other forms: home runs

When a baseball or softball player hits the ball and runs around all four bases, scoring a point for the team, they get a home run.

If you whack the ball hard enough to hit it past the outfield and step on every base, including home plate, the umpire will yell, "Home run!" An "inside the park" home run, when the ball doesn't leave the field, usually involves the other team fumbling the ball badly while the hitter runs around the bases. Use the word figuratively for other exciting successes: "Your presentation on black holes was a total home run!"
